The French and Indian War
Don’t let the name of this war confuse you, the French and Indian
didn’t fight each other, instead they allied with the purpose of
destroying a common enemy, the British. In Europe it was called the 7
years war, and lasted from 1756 to 17563. During the early years of
the war (1756-1757), the French and Indian team was winning. The
Indian would raid frontier settlements in Pennsylvania and Virginia
while the French would supply them with weapons. However, the war
shifted in 1758 in favor of the British once they managed to stop the
French cargo ships.
The Indians realized that without ammunition their chances of winning
the war were next to none, so they disserted the French. The British
are then able to take over St. Lauren’s French forts, Quebec in 1759,
and Motial 1760. Once these cities are conquered the British force the
French governor general to surrender the rest of Canada and get forts
around the Great Lakes. Afterwards, Spain joins France to fight the
British and for the rest of the war the British try to conquer more
Spanish or French territory around the world.
Finally, the war ends in 1763 when the Treaty of Paris is signed. The
British receive Canada from France and Florida from Spain. They allow
the French to keep their West Indian sugar islands and gave Louisiana
to Spain. The war ended up being something good for the British, they
were able to remove their European enemies from America allowing them
to expand more. However, the cost of the war was incredible for the
British government, doubling their debt.
